50mm Lens Meetup

50mm Lens Meetup

Sunday 21 June
Financial District - 11am - 2 Hours
Dakshnamoorthy Parivallal
The 50mm lens is one of the flexible and useful lenses in any photographer’s gear bag. It is neither a wide-angle or telephoto lens, but allows the camera to see on the same scale as your eye. As such, it can be used for a variety of styles, from landscape and street photography to portrait and product photography. In this meetup, we’ll review the basic camera settings. We’ll then cover some of the advantages of shooting with a prime lens, and some basic techniques to using the 50mm lens. As always, there will be ample opportunities for you to put your new knowledge into practice.

The class was amazing. An incredible amount of information packed into a short period of time. The small class size allowed the instructor to work with each of us with finding the specific menus and settings for our individual cameras. He had a great way of explaining things in simple terms.

Overall, this session was very informative and helpful to get me started with my new camera. I rated it as a 4 because the amount of information was huge and it might have been helpful to reduce the volume of content and have more time for the challenges and looking at examples of photos.

Was great to have practical advice and tasks to focus and build photographic skills. For the first time I asked people to take their portraits which built confidence, exploring the streets of Kensington Market in Toronto and knowing which settings to use for my camera was really helpful and fun with the group.

I was very nervous going to this event because of my very beginner level experience. However the group was super friendly and Dakshin made me feel very comfortable. He reviewed my photos and gave recommendations. I was so hapy that I joined a meet up again on March 15 for the Basics of Videography class.

A very knowledgable instructor and patient with the students. The entire session was purely verbal instruction in a public area. At times difficult to follow without visual images to better articulate key learning points or examples of camera settings to support video development.

Title or Location: Toronto Skyline from Humber Bay park
I woke up about 4am this morning and realized there was time to get to Humber Bay park and capture the sunrise. My dog and I hopped in my truck and headed out there. When we arrived, I noticed the pre-dawn sky and lights looked even better than dawn. It was warm and the water was still, capturing a great reflection of the city lights. I setup my Nikon D5300 on my tripod and tried a few locations. This image was captured from the second spot, close to the water's edge. I had a 18-105 Nikon lens

I was delighted to stumble upon this prothonotary warbler while walking on a trail in Point Pelee. Even more delighted to see that he was absolutely not disturbed by my presence (photo taken at a good distance with a 600 mm lens, and cropped), giving me an opportunity to take my time to observe its beauty and snap a few shots here and there.
